Choosing the right size wall art comes down to proportion, placement, and the feeling you want to create in a room. Whether you're selecting a statement photograph for your living room or a smaller framed piece for an entryway, the right dimensions can make all the difference.

A useful rule when hanging artwork above furniture is to aim for approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width. This helps create a balanced relationship between the artwork and the space below it.

My fine art photography is available in four framed sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and Gallery. Below, we break down each size with dimensions, styling recommendations, and examples to help you find the right fit for your home.

Small Framed Wall Art: For Intimate Spaces

Frame dimensions: 12.5" × 18.5"

Small framed photographs are ideal for adding character to intimate spaces or layering with other pieces. Their compact proportions make them especially versatile when styled alongside furniture and decorative objects.

Best suited for:

  • Entryways and narrow walls

  • Open shelving and bookcases

  • Gallery walls and grouped arrangements

  • Bedside tables and smaller consoles

  • Thoughtful gifts

Small artwork works particularly well when anchored by surrounding elements, whether perched on a shelf, displayed above a small table, or paired with another photograph.

For larger walls, consider grouping two or more small frames to create a more substantial arrangement.

Medium Framed Wall Art: A Versatile Choice

Frame dimensions: 19.5" × 25.5"

Medium framed wall art offers flexibility across a range of interiors. It has enough presence to stand alone on a smaller wall while remaining easy to incorporate into a paired arrangement.

Best suited for:

  • Smaller living room walls

  • Above a desk or bar cart

  • Bedrooms and reading nooks

  • Paired photographs

  • Hallways and entryways

Medium photographs work beautifully when you want a considered focal point without overwhelming the room.

For a larger wall, two medium-sized frames displayed side by side can create balance and visual interest.

Large Framed Wall Art: A Statement Without Overwhelming the Room

Frame dimensions: 25.5" × 37.5"

Large framed photographs create a clear focal point while allowing the surrounding space to breathe. This size is well suited to rooms where you want the artwork to play a more prominent role.

Best suited for:

  • Living rooms and seating areas

  • Bedrooms, including above a dresser

  • Home offices

  • Hallways and entryways

  • Feature walls

A single large photograph can bring a sense of place into a room, particularly when displayed above a console, sideboard, or smaller piece of furniture.

For wider walls, consider pairing large photographs or moving up to a Gallery frame, depending on the available wall space.

Gallery Framed Wall Art: For Maximum Impact

Frame dimensions: 33" × 45.5"

Our Gallery size is designed for spaces where the photograph becomes a defining feature of the room.

The larger scale allows the colors, textures, and details of the photograph to be appreciated from across the room, creating a strong sense of place.

Best suited for:

  • Living rooms and statement walls

  • Above sideboards and consoles

  • Spacious bedrooms

  • Large entryways

  • Minimal interiors

Gallery-sized photography works particularly well when given room to stand on its own. A single photograph can anchor a space without the need for additional artwork or decorative elements.

For expansive walls or wide sofas, consider a horizontal Gallery photograph or a curated arrangement of multiple frames.

How to Choose the Right Wall Art Size

Beyond the dimensions of the frame itself, consider how the artwork relates to the furniture and surrounding wall space.

Above a sofa

As a general guide, artwork or a grouping of frames should measure approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width.

For example, above a 76-inch sofa, an arrangement approximately 51–57 inches wide will generally feel balanced. A single smaller photograph may look more intentional on an adjacent wall or above a sideboard.

Above a bed

The same proportion guideline applies when selecting artwork above a bed. Consider the width of the headboard, the ceiling height, and whether you prefer a single statement photograph or a pair of complementary pieces.

In hallways and entryways

Narrow walls often benefit from vertical photographs, while longer hallways can accommodate a series of smaller frames. Consider the viewing distance and allow enough space around each piece.

On large, open walls

A Gallery-sized photograph can create a strong focal point, but the orientation matters just as much as the overall dimensions. Horizontal photography often complements wide furniture, while vertical artwork can emphasize height.

Should You Choose Vertical or Horizontal Wall Art?

The orientation of your artwork can have just as much impact as its size.

Horizontal photographs naturally complement wide spaces, such as above sofas, beds, and long consoles. Vertical photographs work beautifully in narrower areas, including entryways, stairwells, and walls between windows.

Consider the shape of the wall and the surrounding furniture before choosing your photograph. The goal is to create a balanced composition that feels intentional within the room.
